Abstract
Nanomaterials have found many applications in water treatments. Controlling secondary contamination is very important for improving the practical applications of nanomaterials as adsorbents for drinking water treatment. In this study, MnO2 nanofibers was doped with Fe3+ to reduce Mn extraction into water. XRD, SEM, TEM-EDS, BET surface area and pore analysis were used to characterize the materials. Extraction tests were conducted on MnO2 and Fe-doped MnO2. The results revealed that doping significantly reduced dissolution of MnO2, increased SSA and porosity. The effects of dopant amounts on materials properties were also studied and the optimal dopant amount was identified. XPS analyses were conducted to study the mechanism of doping in reducing dissolution of MnO2 nanofibers.
